Mary M. (Coppock) Hammond

Mrs. Mary Marshallette Hammond, 88, of McPherson, passed away peacefully at 8:40 p.m., Saturday, November 28th, 2009 at Cedars Health Care Center, McPherson, Kansas.
Mrs. Hammond was born in Tipp City, Ohio on December 1, 1920, the daughter of Harley Melvin and Olive Elsie (Pearson) Coppock.
Mary graduated from Tippecanoe Exempted Village Schools Tipp City, Ohio. She then attended and graduated from Manchester College, North Manchester, Indiana and received her Masters degree from Northern Colorado University, Greeley, Colorado.
Mary attended the First United Methodist Church wherever she lived.
Mary was a homemaker and worked for the Church of the Brethren in Germany as a volunteer service worker following W.W.II. for two years. She then became an English Teacher at high schools in Texas, New Mexico, Florida, Alabama, and Georgia. She also taught drama and stage craft.
Mary was a very active member of the Toastmasters Club of Warner Robins, Georgia and voted 2nd high for Teacher of the Year in Georgia.
Mary was united in marriage to Irby Illand Hammond on May 29, 1945 at Springer, New Mexico. Irby preceded Mary in death.
Surviving family members include her son, Phillip Hammond of Warner Robins, Georgia; a granddaughter Sarah Hammond Hays; great-grandson, Jaiden Hays; a brother, Stanley Coppock and his wife Velma of Springer, New Mexico; her sisters, Kathryn Miriam Hoover of McPherson, Kansas and her twin sister Martha Noffsinger Roberts of Tipp City, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; many students; and a host of friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Donald Hammond; her husband Irby Hammond; brothers, Maynard, Jay, and Nevin Coppock and a sister, Olive Kessler.
Private family services will be held in McPherson at a later date and burial services will be held on December 8th, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pine Hill Memorial Park in Talladega, Alabama.
