Glenna Merle Betzen, 88, of McPherson, passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Cedars House in McPherson, Kansas.
Glenna Merle Betzen, the daughter of Farris W. and Ethel (Lucas) Campbell, was born October 23, 1921 on her parentís farm near Woodward, Oklahoma. She was one of two children born to this union, one daughter and one son: Merle and Bob. Growing up she and her brother had chores to do and Merle took piano lessons from her mother. She attended the Woodward Country grade school and graduated from Woodward High School Following graduation, Merle attended business school.
Merle was united in marriage to Francis J. Betzen on September 8, 1940 at Woodward, Oklahoma. The young couple established their first home together in Woodward. This union was blessed with the birth of four children, Keith, Kendall, Carol, and Cathy. Merle was a wonderful homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this way. She was a great cook, enjoyed sewing and was very talented in making many of the kidís clothing. In 1953 the family moved to McPherson, Kansas where Merle began working for the C.R. Anthony's Clothier's Department Store as a bookkeeper. The family joined St. Josephís Catholic Church and was a former member of St. Peterís Catholic Church in Woodward, Oklahoma. Merle was a member of the Altar Society and Legion of Mary, and a member of the Elkís Club. In 1980 after Merle and Francisís retirement they moved to Sun City, Arizona. They enjoyed their retirement traveling and spending time visiting family and friends. The family was deeply saddened by the failing health and death of Francis on December 28, 1987. Merle moved back to McPherson to be closer to family.
Merle was a Christian, loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her wise counsel, gentle guidance, and gracious smile will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Merle was very proud of her children and always wanted the best for them. She was especially fond of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren always looking forward to their visits and times they would share together. Merle loved to have her family all together and these were always very special times to her. Merle was a very accomplished musician being able to play the organ and piano by ear, and had a great voice for singing. Merle enjoyed spending time drawing, especially profiles, and working all kind of crafts and puzzles.
Merle entered into eternal rest at Cedars House in McPherson, Kansas, on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, while in the company of family members. She had attained the age of eighty-eight years. Merle was preceded in death by her parents, Farris and Ethel Campbell; her husband Francis; a son, F. Keith Betzen; and her brother, Bob Campbell.
Surviving family members include her children: Kendall Betzen of David City, Nebraska; Carol Austin and her husband John of McPherson, Kansas; and Cathy McProud and her husband Tom, of Olathe, Kansas; ten grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.
Private family services were held at the Glidden-Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kansas by Chaplin Scott Watford.
The final resting place will be at the Elmwood Cemetery, Woodward, Oklahoma.
