Mrs. Stacey Lynne Cordell, 44, of McPherson, KS., passed away at 5:15 a.m., Tuesday, August 17th, 2010 while in the company of family members at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas.
Stacey Lynne Cordell was born December 5, 1965 in West Covina, California. She was the daughter of Dennis Roy and Nancy Ann (Modlin) Layton. She joined her brother, Greg, to make their family complete. Glendora, California was Stacey’s hometown and she attended Sellers Elementary School, Goddard Junior High School, and graduated from Glendora High School in 1984. She was an outstanding volleyball and softball player and still followed the women’s softball teams when they were playing in championship games. Following high school, she attended a travel agency school in San Diego, received her certificate and worked for Slotzy’s Travel Agency in Fullerton, California as a travel agent. She also worked within the California State Park System at Silverwood Lake and being the outdoor girl that she was this was a most enjoyable job for her. During her growing up years, her family made many camping trips to the desert to ride motorcycles. She never lost her love for the bikes and a few years back she had the Harley she had always dreamed of.
On April 29, 1989, Stacey was united in marriage to Scott D. Cordell at LaVerne, California. They were blessed with two children a son, Tyler Scott and a daughter, Kailey Grace. They were the love of her life. She was so proud of them and encouraged them to always do their best no matter what they attempted. Wanting to raise their children in a smaller community, the family moved to McPherson, Kansas in 1995 and found the place they would always call home and people they could always call friends. She and Scott and the kids had a lot of good times camping and also going to one of their favorite places, Colorado. She recently said she had hoped to make memories for her children, not realizing that just being Mom was the most important and valuable memory she could ever give them. Stacey was fortunate to find the work that she truly loved when she began working for the McPherson County Sheriff’s Department as a corrections officer and also became a Reserve Deputy Sheriff. She was proud of the work she did and her family was proud of her service also.
The family joined Calvary Baptist Church and later attended New Hope Evangelical Church. Stacey was a loving, generous and caring woman who had a strong belief in God. A faith that carried her through many of the trials she had to face. But the fight against the cancer just became too long and too hard for her and as courageous as she was she finally had to give up the battle on August 17, 2010 at 5:15 a.m. at Promise Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was surrounded by her family and their love.
Her surviving family members include her husband of twenty-one years, Scott; her children Tyler and Kailey of the home; her parents, Dennis and Nancy Layton of McPherson; her brother, Greg Layton and sister-in-law, Loretta, of Glendora, California; her parents-in-law Dave and Hazel Schneider of Glendora, California; her sister-in-law Robin Myers and husband, Rex, of Redlands, California; her nephews, Russell Layton, Kyle Layton, Luke Layton, and Shane Heflin; aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends.
Friends are invited to call on Thursday, August 19, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. with family present from 6 to 7 p.m. at Glidden - Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kansas.
The funeral service will be held at Glidden-Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kansas, at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 20, 2010 with Pastor Jim Keil and Pastor H. Dick Reynolds, Jr. officiating. Special music “Amazing Grace” and “Run For You” will be played.
