Mrs. Virginia K. Williams, age 95, of McPherson, KS , passed away at 3:00 AM, Sunday, August 14th, 2005 peacefully at M.T.M. Boarding Care Home, McPherson, Kansas.
Virginia K. Smith, the daughter of Doc H. and Anna (Schmidt) Smith, was born August 30, 1909 in Moundridge, Kansas. She attended the Moundridge Public Schools and graduated from Moundridge High School. She then attended Phillips University, Enid, Oklahoma and graduated from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas. After graduating from Kansas State, Virginia began her teaching career in which she devoted 33 years of her life. Twenty-eight of those years were in McPherson City Schools. She taught in a country school for two years, and Galva 4th and 5th grade for 3 years before coming to McPherson and teaching until her retirement in 1971.
Virginia was brought up in the Christian Church of Moundridge, Kansas and was baptized there in 1924. When she began teaching in McPherson she transferred her membership to the First Christian Church in McPherson where she remained a faithful and active member until her health began to fail and she was no longer able to attend.
Following the death of her sister Velma on March 3, 1976, Virginia married her sister’s husband, Robert L. Williams on June 3, 1978 at the First Christian Church, McPherson, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 22, 1985.
Virginia was a charter member of the McPherson Area Retired Teachers Association, a Life member of the Kansas Retired Teachers, and National Retired Teachers Association. Virginia was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary of McPherson.
On Sunday, August 14, 2005 Virginia died and entered into eternal rest at the age of ninety-five years, 11 months and 15 days, at M.T.M. Boarding Care Home, McPherson, Kansas. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Velma Williams, and husband Robert.
Surviving members of her family include a niece Carolyn Muhring of Derby, Kansas; nephews, Gary Fisher of Blue Springs, Missouri and Daryl Williams of Haven, Kansas; cousins, Ruth Walline, Galva, Kansas, Sally Brammer, Wichita, Kansas, and Karen Schmidt, Bev Schmidt, and Trixie Schmidt all of Hydro, Oklahoma; and other cousins and many friends and students.
The funeral service will be conducted by Pastor John Gran at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at the First Christian Church, McPherson, Kansas. Special music “Precious Lord Take My Hand”, and “The Lord’s Prayer” will be sung by Marilyn King and Clifford King with Emma Perera accompanying. “How Great Thou Art” page #33 will be sung by the congregation.
The graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at the Mound Township Cemetery, Moundridge, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church, McPherson, Kansas in memory of Virginia.
