Gloria A. Hawkinson

02 August, 2011 by Ed Ediger

Gloria Ann (Dimond) Hawkinson, 72, of Marquette, Kansas passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at Riverview Estates in Marquette.

Gloria was born on the kitchen table of her parents’ farm in Little River, KS, on April 29, 1939, the daughter of Cecil & Hazel Dimond. She attended Little River schools, graduating from Little River High School.

A beloved wife and mother, Gloria married Larry Hawkinson on February 22, 1959. She spent the early years of her marriage working at Farmer’s Alliance while her husband attended McPherson College. She continued her career after raising her two children and moving to Idaho with her family, working as a Branch Office Administrator for Edward D. Jones in Caldwell, ID.

Gloria and Larry, the “love of her life,” enjoyed traveling and had the opportunity to visit such places as Hong Kong and Communist China and take a memorable sailing cruise through the Caribbean Islands. She was a constant companion and loving caregiver for her husband as he faced serious health issues and was by his side until he died in 1992. She returned to Marquette to take care of her parents until they passed away.

Survivors include her son Kevin Hawkinson and his wife Stephanie of Wellesley, MA, daughter Kandi Myers of Caldwell, ID, sister Sharon Case and her husband Kermit of Louisville, KY, brother Richard Dimond and his wife Dianne, of Hollywood, FL, five grandchildren and many other family members and good friends. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 8, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home in McPherson.

Visiting hours will be Sunday, August 7, 2011 from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m at the funeral home.

She will be buried next to her husband at a private service in Caldwell, Idaho.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be sent to Riverview Estates, P.O. Box 158, Marquette, KS 67464 or in care of Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home, 222 W. Euclid Street, McPherson, KS 67460.

I am the oldest grandchild and next was Sharon, not far behind was Gloria. We had fun as kids. Sorry for your loss. I hope to attend Monday. Her birth certificate should say for sure where she was born. I don't remember. Just know you lived both places at different times. Cousin Ruth

Kevin and Kandi: It's seems like an eternity ago that we all rode the school bus together to Santa Fe School. I'm so very sorry to hear about your Mom. Hold tight to all those wonderful memories you have of her. Your family is in my thoughts.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Our thoughts and prayer are with you. We will plan to attend the memorial service in McPherson on Monday, the Lord willing. By the way, she was born on the kitchen table on a farm west of Portis, KS.
