Elsa Viola (Nelson) Johnson

Mrs. Elsa Viola Johnson, age 88, of McPherson, KS, passed away at 2:05 AM, Friday, November 18th, 2005 peacefully at Bethany Home, Linsborg, KS.

Elsa Viola (Nelson) Johnson, daughter of Carl August and Amanda (Carlson) Nelson was born on June 26, 1917 in McPherson, Kansas. She was one of two children born to this union. Elsa attended the Galva elementary schools and graduated from Galva High School in 1936.

On June 4, 1939, Elsa was united in marriage to Milbert Arnold Johnson at the New Gottland Lutheran Church. They were blessed with the birth of four sons, Carl, Burdette, Edward, and Paul. Elsa was a fulltime homemaker raising her family until she started working as a nurse’s aide at the McPherson Hospital in 1961. When Elsa retired from the McPherson Hospital in 1984, she worked as a home health nurse and community and church volunteer.

Elsa was a devoted Christian, a kind and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend. The needs of her family were important to Elsa and she helped them in any way that she could. She was actively involved as a member of Gideon International for many years. During her leisure time, Elsa was an avid gardener and cook. Elsa, along with Milbert, would process much of their garden produce for the winter. Elsa so enjoyed cooking large meals for family holidays especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. Elsa spent many hours reading the Bible. Elsa was a faithful and active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the Rachel Guild, and Christian Women’s Club. She also volunteered her time to Meals on Wheels, American Red Cross Blood Mobile and Trash to Treasure.

On November 18, 2005, Elsa went on to meet her Lord at the Bethany Home in Lindsborg, Kansas. She had attained the age of eighty-eight years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Melvin Nelson, two sons, Carl and Burdett Johnson, and her husband Milbert in 1995.

Surviving members of her family include two sons, Edward and Melanie Johnson of Olathe, Kansas and Paul Johnson of Perry, Kansas, two grandsons, Marc and Matthew Johnson, nephews LaRue Nelson and his wife Leta, of McPherson, Kansas, Lan Nelson of Lindsborg, Kansas, Lynn Nelson and his wife Diane, of Wichita, Kansas, and Lowell Nelson and his wife Sue, of McPherson, Kansas, nieces,
other relatives, and many friends.

Friends are invited to call Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Glidden - Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kansas.

Funeral service will be at Trinity Lutheran Chrurch, McPherson, KS. at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 23rd, with Reverend Michael J. Fibranz and Reverend Donald Hawk officiating.

The final resting place will be at New Gottland Lutheran Church Cemetery McPherson, KS.
