Mr. James L. (Jim) Aitken, 84, of McPherson, passed away at 2:55 p.m., Saturday, December 24th, 2011 at Cedars Health Care Center, McPherson, Kansas. Mr. Aitken was born in Tecumseh, Nebraska on September 5, 1927, the son of the late Courtney Milton and Ellen Cecilia (Murphy) Aitken.Jim attended grade school and graduated from high school at Tecumseh, NebraskaHe was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church McPherson, Kansas and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served in the US Army. He also served in the National GuardHe was employed as a Stillman & Pipefitter at National Cooperative Refinery Association McPherson, Kansas. Jim was a member of both e Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2715 and American Legion Post # 24 in McPherson, Kansas. James was united in marriage to Patricia D. Jennings at McPherson, Kansas at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church on September 4, 1954. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Aitken of McPherson, Kansas; a daughter,Teresa Aitken of Topeka, Kansas; four sons, Michael (Julie) Aitken of Stow, Ohio, James (Irena) Aitken of Newport News, Virginia, Larry (Tracey) Aitken of McPherson, Kansas, and Andrew (Marlena) Aitken of Wichita, Kansas; one brother, Jack Aitken of Nebraska; six grandchildren, Sarah (Barry) Henry, Luke Aitken, Courtny Aitken, Chelsey O'Boyle, Eilidh and Iain Aitken; four great grandchildren - Silas and Asa Courtney, Wyatt and Levi Henry; other relatives and friends.James was preceded in death by by his parents and a son David Lee Aitken and a daughter, Ellen Marie Clark,Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home, McPherson, Kansas. The rosary will be held at the funeral home following the visitation.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, McPherson, KS, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2011 with Fr. Dwight Birket officiating. Military rites will be provided by members of American Legion Post No. 24 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2715, both of McPherson, Kansas, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church following the funeral mass.Private family burial of cremated remains will be held at McPherson Cemetery McPherson, Kansas, at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the McPherson County Food Bank in care of Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home, 222 W. Euclid Street, McPherson, KS 67460.
